Course info
The 2nd cycle degree course in Electronic Engineering is characterized by a broad spectrum setting, providing full training in the various sectors of specific interest in electronics, supplemented by further studies in the fields of measurements, electromagnetic fields and telecommunications. For this reason, the course is structured in curricula and recommended options, enabling students to choose the profile that best suits their attitudes and, at the same time, more responsive to the business environment and the market. To achieve this outcome, the course is characterized by a number of mandatory common teachings providing students knowledge in the three complementary fields of Electronics, Fields and Telecommunications, covering the variety of employment opportunities, in purely Electronic fields as well as for the integration of the Internet world and information transport and processing technologies with modern electronic systems and technologies. Particular emphasis is placed on applied electronics, on the study of optoelectronics and telecommunications and automation measures, and finally on the aspects related to the implementation of electronic systems based on high-speed processors and interfaces. After this common path, the course is divided into different curricula, enabling students to deepen, respectively, the aspects of Electronics, Telecommunication or Mechatronics. In detail, the curriculum "Modern Electronics" provides various recommended paths, to train students with a high level of knowledge in the field of micro/nano electronic systems, electronics and RF and microwave systems or Automotive, Industry and Energy. Electronics In detail, the first path deepens the knowledge of micro/nano electronic systems. In this path, the study of physics and the structure of semiconductor materials for electronics and photonics is followed by the study of solid state devices utilizing both classical and quantum physical properties such as heterostructure and nanoelectronic devices and related applications. A second path aims at deepening the knowledge of RF and microwave electronics, and therefore it is studying the circuits and systems that exploit the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the frequency fields ranging from radio frequency to microwave, including those frequencies where the transmission of information is entrusted to photons. The third path is geared toward Electronics for Industry, Energy and the Car, where the most important issues are Electronics for Industrial Robotics and Photovoltaic Devices and Systems. In addition, the "Telecommunications" curriculum aims to train experts in telecommunications and digital infrastructure, with particular reference to the emerging scenarios of Internet-of things systems and mobile broadband access. The course provides solid groundings on the techniques of modeling and interfacing to the electromagnetic transmission medium, on the main modulation and encoding techniques for the protection of information from disturbance and interference, on medium access techniques used in radio communication systems, on modern transmission network architectures, with particular attention to the security and confidentiality aspects of information, and the design and management of services in the Internet of things. Finally, the "Mechatronics" curriculum aims at training transversal professional figures with respect to traditional engineering, capable of performing analysis of systems of various physical nature, of planning of the objectives to be achieved, of carrying out the mathematical formulation of a control problem taking into account the aforementioned objectives, solving this problem also through the available software tools and, finally, its practical implementation.
TProfile: Electronic Engineer Functions: Technical and managerial roles, in planning and research areas, with respect to the specific aspects of Electronics in particular. Graduates in Electronic Engineering may find professional opportunities in the design, development, engineering, production, operation and maintenance of electronic systems, but also in ICT. Graduates will be able to work in various professional contexts related to electronics: from micro/nano-electronics to electronic design, to electronics for industry, energy, cars. Graduates in Electronic Engineering know the main methods and techniques for designing electronic components, systems and apparatus and the relevant production processes. The training is completed and integrated by laboratory experiences. Competences: The degree provides high-technology skills and in particular: - design and production of electronic components, subsystems and systems; - engineering, operation and maintenance of electronic systems; - evaluation and installation of electronic apparatus and components for communications networks; - electronic control of apparatus, machines, production chains; - management of electronic measuring systems, laboratories and production lines. In detail, graduates will have gained advanced knowledge of electronic circuits, processors, electronic hardware chips, computer hardware and software, including knowledge of application packages and programming languages, information transmission through telecommunication, broadcasting, and connection and control via Internet networks. Career opportunities: Electronic Engineers are an answer to the needs of transversal skils, increasingly demanded in Smart Cities, in the Internet of Things, in big data, in secure, broadband telecommunications networks, in new generation power networks, in electric and smart cars, in domotics, mechatronics, robotics, but also in diagnostic medicine, in new production technology and in modern engineering. The typical jobs of the graduate in Electronic Engineering are those of innovation in ICT, production, design, planning and programming. Graduates can find employment at: - design and production companies of electronic components, systems, systems and infrastructures; Manufacturing or service industries; - Production and operational facilities employing electronic technologies and infrastructures for signal processing in civil, industrial and information fields; - Telecommunications systems operators; - Automation systems management for industry and services; - Regulatory and control bodies; - Public and Private Research Institutes and agencies, with design, research and development responsibilities; - Public administrations; - Self-employment
The final examination of the 2nd cycle Degree Course in “Electronic Engineering” consists of the discussion of a written dissertation, written by the student under the guidance of an academic supervisor. The dissertation topic must be previously approved by the Board of the Degree Course, and is related to issues of high scientific content, normally related to studies or plans highlighting innovative aspects of the typical Electronics research sectors.
