Course info
The course specifically aims at educating professional experts in applied research activities based on the use of biotechnologies. Students are prepared to their future employment in laboratories using genetic manipulation techniques, in biomedical laboratories for molecular diagnostics, in laboratories for food production and control and monitoring the presence of GMOs, in laboratories for protein and new drugs engineering. To prepare students for their future professional activities of research and technological development, the first year of the course will provide advanced knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology, functional genetics, as well as advanced knowledge of biological systems, including microorganisms, plants and more evolved animal organisms such as human beings. Biological knowledge includes the use of traditional analytical equipment as well as of modern biotechnologies, such as genomics, proteomics, nanotechnologies, genetic engineering and bioinformatics, and will be integrated by adequate chemical knowledge and by the knowledge of issues related to the use of chemical, biotechnological and industrial plants. The second year is characterised by the study in depth and the implementation of previously acquired knowledge. After a period of laboratory activity at university and external facilities, it will mostly devoted to the preparation of an experimental dissertation
- Research activity in public laboratories (University, National research Council), or private ones (various types of biotechnological industry laboratories), where genetic engineering, biochemistry and molecular biology techniques are used; - Development of new products and innovative processes in companies for the extraction of biologically useful compounds from living organisms; - Development of industrial processes with low environmental impact and/or development of reclamation actions: - Analysis in biomedical laboratories (namely, in laboratories using bio-molecular diagnostic techniques); - Analysis in laboratories for human or animal food production.
It consists of the presentation of an original dissertation prepared by the candidate under the guidance of a supervising professor; the dissertation may be written in Italian or English (candidate's choice) and should report the results of the research activity carried out during the internship at a university laboratory, or at an external laboratory with which the University has signed a specific agreement. The content of the dissertation will also be presented to an examining Board consisting of at least seven members. For the presentation, candidates should also use audio-visuals. During and/or at the end of the presentation, the members of the Board may ask questions to the candidate in order to better assess the level of preparation he/she has reached. The final mark will be determined by the Board on the basis of the final examination, also taking into account the marks obtained in individual examinations.
