Graduates must achieve the level of competence provided by the specific professional profiles detailed in the Decree of the Ministry of Health September 14, 1994, n. 743 and subsequent amendments and additions concerning liability of orthoptist-assistants in ophthalmology. The attainment of professional skills is accomplished through a theoretical and practical training which also includes the acquisition of behavioural skills , achieved in the context of the specific profile, so as to ensure, at the end of the course, the full mastery of all necessary skills and their immediate marketability in the workplace. Particular emphasis, as an integral part of vocational training, is given to practical educational activities and clinical training, carried out under the supervision and guidance of professional tutors specially assigned, coordinated by a teacher belonging to the higher level for the professional profile of orthoptist and corresponding to the rules defined at European level if any, and carried out as part of a three-year apprenticeship period of at least 56 credits. Graduates of the class carry out their professional activities in local public, private and/or accredited health facilities, and in home care both as employees or freelance. Since the learning activities of the degree course aim at providing students with an adequate command of general scientific methods and contents, as well as the acquisition of specific professional knowledge in the area of science orthotic, they: • include lectures and activities in the context of introductory science, biology and psychology, orthoptics and ophthalmologic assistance, medicine and surgery, prevention and health services, interdisciplinary clinics, health management, interdisciplinary science, human and psycho-pedagogical sciences; • are further characterized by the teachings and activities and vocational training, directly related to the profession of orthoptist; • include, in relation to specific objectives, the advanced study of some of the teachings and activities, with hands-on activities and vocational training at public health facilities and possibly also private and/or credited ones, as well as periods of study at other Italian and foreign universities within the framework of international agreements. For this purpose the CDL can create a training network with other structures by the University of Palermo, in order to ensure the completion of the offer for theoretical as well as for practical skills. Upon completion of the degree course, graduates in Orthotics and Ophthalmologic Care, according to the educational programme, must achieve the expertise provided by the Ministerial Decree: • in the treatment, prescribed by a doctor, of motor and sensory disorders of vision. • in the execution of the techniques of instrumental semiotics in Ophthalmology. • in the organization, planning and evaluation of the quality of the professional activities undertaken within the framework of their duties. • in direct participation to the updating of their professional profile and research.
Graduates of this course may carry out their professional activity in Hospitals and regional healthcare services, specialist credited or private clinics, or as visual impairment and prosthetic rehabilitation specialists.
To be admitted to the final examination, students must have successfully passed all the exams required, including those relating to vocational training and professional practice and have acquired the relevant credits. They must also have prepare a dissertation and discuss it in front of a Board, and demonstrate practical skills related to the profession of Orthoptist and assistants in ophthalmology. Students must communicate the title of their dissertation to the Educational Board by the first semester of the third year, indicating the name of the supervisor. Students must give their dissertation at the Secretary's office at least thirty days before the date of the degree. At the same time, they must give to the Secretary their educational booklet of the technical and practical training and a certified copy of the notification to the Educational Board of the title of the dissertation. The degree in Orthotics and Ophthalmologic Care is achieved by passing a final examination consisting of a written test, a test demonstration of professional skills related to the practice of orthoptic and ophthalmological that can 'be done as a "practice test simulated" and drafting and discussion of a topic of theoretical application. Entries can also be made in a foreign language previously agreed. The final test has the value of qualifying State examination in the practice. It takes place in two sessions during the periods (October-November and June-July) and in the manner prescribed by special decree of the Ministry of Education in consultation with the Ministry of Health before a Board of Examiners composed in the manner prescribed by MD April 2, 2001. Dates of its meetings shall be communicated to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health that can send experts as their representatives. The final vote of one hundred and ten degree is expressed and the test is passed if the candidate has obtained a mark of at least 66/110. When the candidate has obtained the highest marks can be attributed praise. The final vote, taking into account the whole student's academic career will be developed by the sum of the basic votes resulting from the curriculum + eleven points raised by the Commission and divided into: the vote of the written paper (maximum three points); the vote of the practical test (five points); the evaluation of the thesis (maximum three points). The thesis will be considered worthy of mention regardless of the degree grade and, in the unanimous opinion of the Commission, may have conferred the dignity of print. Graduates in Orthotics and Ophthalmologic Care can be accessed without any educational debt to the Degree in Science orthotic.
