Educational objectives
Hide
The degree course in Biotechnologies aims at providing students with the essential knowledge, behavioural and technical competences for a modern study and research methodology, for the use of biological functions and systems for the production of goods and services, including the knowledge of economic and ethical issues, related to the use of biotechnological products. The specific course objectives are oriented towards the acquisition of further university training as well as to a possible immediate access to the labour market. The first two years of the course, common to all students, aim at providing students the competences and tools for the theoretical-experimental study of biological phenomena as well as the specific competence and skills to study biological phenomena at molecular, cellular and tissue level. These two years take place at the Faculty of Science. In the third year, the course provides different curricula, enabling students to direct their training towards different specific areas of biotechnology, to give a professional character to their training and to be prepared, through the possible continuation of their studies, to the achievement of the second level degrees. The expected learning outcomes, in accordance with the principles of European harmonization, meet the requirements formulated according to the system of the Dublin Descriptors.
Professional opportunities
Hide
The three year course provides basic and professional competences and skills enabling undergraduates not only to access the 2nd cycle degrees, but also to find immediate job opportunities. Graduates in Biotechnologies may find professional opportunities in the following professional fields: - Universities and other public and private research agencies; - Food industry and pharmaceutical industry and research centres; - Research and development centred for biotechnological diagnostics; - Scientific dissemination and information; - Toxicological and environmental research and survey centres; - Biotechnological service centres; - Facilities of the National Healthcare System; - Agencies for the preparation of healthcare and licensing regulations related to the use of biotechnological products. The degree in Biotechnologies is awarded to the students who have acquired the above mentioned competences as well as the capability of applying them in specific professional contexts, and of communicating their competences and transferring their technical skills in the labour market, in a relation with national and international professionals, from other scientific fields also.
Final examination features
Hide
To be admitted to the final degree examination, students must have passed individual subject examinations for 175 credits, included the credits related to the knowledge of a foreign language. The final examination consists of the presentation of a paper, written under the guidance of a supervising professor, awarded with 5 credits. The final examination aims at ascertaining the competences acquired by the student during the practice/internship period. The final mark is awarded out of 110 and includes a global evaluation of the undergraduate's curriculum. The final mark is obtained calculating the weighted average of the marks obtained in individual teachings, awarded out of 30, including marks obtained in other degree courses and recognized, and the relevant credits. The examining Board may add to the average (converted on a 110 scale) a maximum of 11 points (interest of the topic, clarity of exposition, mastery of the subject). Students who reach the final mark of 110 may be awarded with praise by unanimous vote of the Board. The final examination Board consists of minimum of seven up to a maximum members, including Professors and Researchers of the relevant Faculties. The functions of Chairman of the Board are carried out by the Dean, or in his absence by the President of the Degree Course, or the most senior professor in the role. External professors or experts may also be part of the committee, in addition, and only for the discussion of the papers of which they are co-supervisors.
