Course info
The 2nd cycle degree course in Electronic and Photonic Engineering aims at educating students with advanced knowledge in the fields of electron transmission as well as of circuits propagating electromagnetic waves in frequency ranges from radiofrequency to microwaves, and finally in the transmission of information through photons. To achieve this objective, the educational programme is characterised by some educational lines, the crossing of which may help students to trigger their insight into different problems in order to identifying the most advantageous plans. The first educational line entails the study of physics of materials, and of the structure of solid materials for electronics and photonics, followed by the study of solid state devices exploiting both classical and quantum attributes of materials. This knowledge is the basis for further educational lines in the fields of concentrated and distributed parameters electronics for high frequencies and microwaves on one side, and for the study of photonic devices and systems, on the other. Finally, particular attention is paid to communications. In particular the course will study in depth optical communications and electronics for telecommunications, as well as the aspects related to the implementation of telecommunication systems also based on high speed processors and electronic interfaces.
The educational profile of the 2nd cycle Degree Course in Electronic Engineering enables graduates to find professional opportunities in all typical areas of Electronic Engineering, and namely; - design and production of electronic and/or photonic components, subsystems and systems; - Engineering, running and maintenance of electronic systems; - Evaluation and installation of electronic systems and components for communication networks, - Electronic control of systems, machines, production chains; - Management of electronic and/or photonic measurement systems, of laboratories and production lines. Moreover, the higher level of competence, with respect to 1st cycle graduates, enables 2nd cycle graduates to have a faster and more dynamic access to high technical-managerial positions in industrial facilities as well as in research and development laboratories.
The final examination of the 2nd cycle degree course in Electronic Engineering consists of the discussion of a written dissertation, prepared by the student under the guidance of a supervisor; the dissertation topic, which should be approved by the Board of the Degree Course, studies in depth issues with high scientific content; it should be related to innovative aspects of the typical research area of Electronics.
