The 2nd cycle Degree Course in History of Art is designed in a way to provide graduates with advanced education in the field of historical-artistic subjects with competences in the various fields of figurative arts, under the chronological point of view, from the Middle Age to the Contemporary Age, under the geographic point of view form the byzantine to the western area, and under the disciplinary point of view, from strictly historical subjects to methodological ones. The course provides the capability of using adequate computer tools for personal production, publishing and filing of historical-artistic heritage, as well as the methodological skills for correct bibliographic research as well as for the study and interpretation of primary and secondary sources. The course thus provides a wide range of specialist historical-artistic subjects (History of Design, Phenomenology of Contemporary Art, History of Textiles, Iconography and Iconology, Comparative History of the Art of European countries, etc.), and an advanced methodological investigation for the study and analysis of the artistic phenomena and their transmission patterns (methodology for the study of Decorative Arts, Contemporary Art Teaching Methodology and Communication, Iconography and Iconology, History of Art Criticism, History of miniature, etc.). These objectives are achieved through: - The use of lectures and seminars and subsequent assessment of acquired skills through written and/or oral tests; - Field applications of the acquired knowledge and methodologies also through synergies with the main museums of Palermo (Diocesan Museum, Regional Gallery-Palazzo Abatellis, etc.) who showed their availability during the confrontation necessary for the planning of the Degree Course; - Specific lessons and/or exercises designed to provide the skills needed to carry out literature and documentary research on traditional media or via the Internet; - The possible development of short papers of personal synthesis or bibliographical research or analysis of the sources and their interpretation; - The preparation of a final written dissertation, representing the main occasion for original and personal elaboration of acquires knowledge and methods. The course also provides some elective courses enabling students to have partial autonomy in the characterization of their training. The duration of the 2nd cycle Degree Course in Art History is two years. To achieve the Degree in Art History, students must have acquired 120 credits.
The professional opportunities for graduates of this course are: - Art historian - Superintendent of the nation's cultural heritage - Director of museums - Officer of high responsibility in public and private institutions for the protection of cultural heritage; - Curator and keeper in museums - - Cataloguer of artistic and historical heritage - Professional expert advice for museum education and for initiatives aiming at the enhancement and protection of the historical and artistic heritage - Promotion and realization of exhibitions, cultural projects - Training of staff in cultural tourism - Research Centres - Cultural Foundations - Publishing (books and specialized press) - Expert of art - Professor in the Academy of Fine Arts and the University Elective activities enable students to improve their preparation for these career opportunities, and to facilitate the access of others not covered here. Graduates of the 2nd cycle degree in Art History may find employment as school teachers, once completed the process of teaching qualifications and passed competitions required by law. Graduates of the 2nd cycle degree in Art History will be able to access a PhD course, in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry and of individual universities, or a second level University Master Course, subject to the regulations of University that organizes it. Mandatory activities of the Degree Course are also designed to prepare to access PhD courses in the following subject areas: Area 10-Philological, Literary and Historical-Artistic Sciences of Antiquity. Elective activities enable students to improve their preparation for this type of research doctorate and to facilitate access to other types of PhD.
The final examination consists of the presentation and discussion of an original dissertation prepared by the student under the guidance of a supervisor, who is the teacher of the subject chosen by the student as major, in one of the scientific sectors present into the educational programme. Computer skills and language skills will be assessed too. The methods for choosing and preparing the dissertation topic as well as for choosing the supervisor are set by the Board of the Faculty and described in the Course regulations. To be admitted to the final examination, viz. the discussion of the dissertation, which leads to the acquisition of 24 credits, the student must have earned 96 credits. The way in which the final examination will be carried out shall be determined by the Faculty Board and described in the Course regulations.
