Course info
The 2nd cycle degree course in Medical Biotechnologies and Molecular Medicine aims at educating graduates mastering the application of the scientific method to biological systems with respect, in particular, to the use of tools and competences in various biotechnological areas to solve problems as well as to provide goods or services in the field of diagnosis, prevention and therapy of human diseases. The course consists of frontal teaching, seminars, laboratory, practice, internship practice and of an experimental dissertation, prepared by the student in a laboratory selected by him/her, during his/her stay for an adequate period of time, in a facility which is highly specialised and qualified under the technical-scientific point of view.
2nd cycle graduates in Medical Biotechnologies an Molecular Medicine may work, with responsibility and autonomy, in public or private research agencies as well as in companies in the biotechnological/biomedical/pharmaceutical area, namely in companies in the field of Molecular Medicine. They may work, in particular: - In companies carrying out research, development and production of biotechnological therapeutical and diagnostic agents; - In research institutions an public or private healthcare companies, with 2nd cycle graduates in Medicine and Surgery, designing and applying diagnostic and therapeutic strategies based on biotechnologies, including those aiming at regenerating tissues and organs. 2nd cycle graduates of this class may direct laboratories with prevalent biotechnological and pharmacological character as well as coordinate, at managerial and administrative level too, programs for the development and surveillance of applied biotechnologies in the human and animal field, with respect, in particular, to the development of drug products and vaccines, taking into account the ethical, technical, legal and environmental protection.
It is awarded with 6 credits; students access to final examination after having acquired 114/120 credits. The final examination consists of the discussion of a dissertation about the original outcomes of an innovative experimental activity in the field of medical biotechnologies and molecular medicine, carried out by the student under the guidance of one or more supervising professor/s. The supervising professor should belong to the 2nd cycle degree course; a co-supervisor and an external reviewer will participate too. The dissertation should be presented during the public session of an examining Board. The observance with the terms and timetable for the thesis is under the direct and exclusive control of the supervisor and co-supervisor. The Examining Board, appointed by the Dean of the Faculty, will award the 2nd cycle degree.
