Graduates of this course should: - possess advanced knowledge of two languages besides Italian, with full command of the variations due to the socio-linguistic, international and multimedia context of the language as well as of the receptive and productive skills of the speakers involved; - know the civilisation of the Country of the studied language in its historical-geographic, economic-social and political aspects, in a way to use them in an international communication perspective; - command the methods and tools of analysis and theoretical thinking about languages, and of applied linguistics in its declinations; - command the communication tools , including web-specific ones (sites, blogs, platforms and the like) and use them in professional activities; - be aware of the cognitive an psycho-social principles of multilingualism and multiculturalism, as well as the principal activities characterising them, with a particular attention to the variety of translation processes underlying linguistic activities and professional profiles; - command specialist language, with respect, in particular, to the audio-visual translation from specific language to Italian; - have acquired knowledge of core social, economic and legal science subjects . The course is divided into two curricula, “Western” and “Arabic and Islamic Studies”, with the same educational objectives and the same course organisation, despite the differences related to the diversity of languages and civilisations.
Profile: Translator and liaison and negotiation interpreter/Language ombudsman - High-level translator in the literary-audio-visual field Functions: Liaison interpreters or linguistic and cultural mediators carry out high responsibility tasks in intercultural relations between individuals, private citizens and public bodies, between national and international bodies. They must possess the mastery of at least one foreign language and communication skills. They may work in multiple areas of intervention, from the medical to the political one. Literary translators must possess in addition to the linguistic knowledge an in-depth knowledge of the cultures and civilizations of the languages to and from which they translate as well as advanced literary competence. Audio-visual translators must command the language and culture of incoming and outgoing language, as well as the appropriate technical tools. Skills: - intercultural relations and intercultural intermediation: a) Cultural mediator with functions of high responsibility, in the context of international relations in companies, public administration, volunteering, local authorities as well as in the direction of international organizations, cooperation and development aid; Professional activities: - experts in institutions and institutions in the field of economic, social and cultural integration; - consultants specialists in public bodies for the protection of immigrant languages and more generally in relation to the linguistic legislation of the European Union. b) Literary translators can work as freelance or in publishing houses, public and private institutions, foundations, theatres. Audio-visual translation experts can work at companies in the sector. Professional opportunities: - linguistic mediator for national, international and non-profit organizations. - literary translator. - specialized translator. - liaison and consecutive interpreter - audio-visual translation expert Profile: Specialists in human resources Functions: - They contribute to dynamically program the organization staff needs with respect to the expected flows of personnel (incoming, internal mobility, outgoing) by examining data/information from various sources (data related to employed staff, age, turnover, to the needs coming from the various units that make up the organization, to the company strategies) integrating them with others related to the potential and performance of the resources already occupied; - They collaborate to the definition of the quantity and quality of human resources to be acquired from the external labour identifying the profiles of the personnel to be hired, and the relevant requisites; - They deal with the recruitment and selection of personnel, carrying out pre-selection activities, preliminary interviews, selection interviews, supporting the managers of the organizational units in which staff will be employed, through technical/specialist interviews;; - They deal with trade union issues, negotiating and reaching agreements with workers' representatives; - they contribute to the drafting and development, collaborating with the line, of plans for the insertion and reception of personnel; - they contribute to the development of potential assessment interventions that may involve both incoming personnel (connected to the selection process) and personnel already employed and participating in their implementation; - they collaborate in the design of systems for assessing employees’ performance participating in the development of the actions necessary to ensure a widespread acceptance of the system adopted and a behaviour of the evaluators consistent with the system itself; - collaborates to identify the training and training needs, current and future, of the resources acquired and those already occupied, and the design and development of the related interventions; collaborates in the definition of remuneration policies; - they collaborate in the definition and development of initiatives related to health and safety in the workplace. Skills: Human resources specialists are normally full-time employees. The classification and treatment depend on the type of National Collective Labour Contract applied. They deal with the different aspects of the management of a company's staff or administration: salaries and social contributions of employees, recruitment of employees, continuing education, social relations. Professional opportunities: - business consultancy in the management and recruitment of personnel; research, selection and recruitment of personnel with the required qualification; - Observation and analysis of the evolution of the labour and professional market; - Updating of job vacancies - Establishing and maintaining contacts with potential employers; - managing the dossiers of unemployed people and people looking for a job: conducting personal interviews, analyzing individual situations, drafting the balance of competences; - deal with the full time or temporary placement of unemployed people taken over by the regional employment offices; - promotion of active reintegration measures (refresher courses, language courses, etc.). Profile: Editors of texts for advertising and editors of technical texts Functions: The editors of texts for advertising and technical writers must: - develop, design or create new applications, ideas, reports and new systems and products (including artistic contributions); - keep abreast of technical changes and apply new knowledge; create constructive and cooperative working relationships and maintain them over time; - analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems; - communicate with people outside the organization, actiong as representatives towards customers, the public, administrations and other external entities, personally, in writing, by telephone or e-mail, also in a foreign language. Skills: They will be able to: - write advertising texts (selecting the type of message, the language, reviewing drafts, adapting foreign texts, etc.); - evaluate, set up or carry out advertising campaigns: - identify, select and implement an advertising idea: - study and update (read information material, search for information on the internet, etc.); - take care of customer relations designing graphic projects; - present the work to the clients; - coordinate or participate in working groups; - write commercials for radio and television; - select artistic collaborators or cast (photographers, directors, etc.); - take care of the production of television spots (ideation, screenplay, set work, etc.) - organize/participate in meetings; - receive and analyse customer requests or needs; - write announcements or articles for the press; - coordinate work and supervise the work of collaborators; - create names for products and companies; - create advertising slogans; - plan and schedule work or activities; - take care of relations with the media; - prepare or manage communication strategies - draft or prepare technical texts - select the media to promote the advertising campaign - develop project ideas - carry out administrative activities - buy advertising spaces - attend press conferences - write the texts for the production of information materials - write or produce multimedia texts - carry out didactic activity Professional opportunities: - copywriter - creator and editor of advertising texts - freelance advertising texts editor - employee technical texts Profile: Journalists (after registering), freelance publicists Functions: The journalist or publicist should possess: - the ability to communicate information and ideas by writing so that others understand; - the ability to read and understand information and ideas exposed in writing; - the ability to quickly grasp meaning, to combine and organize information in significant dimensions. Skills: They should be able to: - manage a journalistic editorial office; - Pre-order, coordinate and monitor the work of journalists, taking care of the commercial performance of the newspaper (responsible director or deputy director); - technically implement the publication according to the directives given by the director; - manage the decentralized editorial offices and correspondence offices and, together with the head of service, select the news and assign specific tasks to the editors of the various sectors (editor-in-chief); - be responsible for one of the various sections of the newspaper (news, economics, politics, sport, culture) and to coordinate editors and correspondents (head of service); - work within the editorial office, taking care of the collection and selection of news and announcements arriving from the press agencies by the correspondents and reporters; - take care of the page they are in charge for (editor) in a constant and continuous way - take care of the writing of daily news articles, which provide a description of the facts as timely and as objective as possible (reporter) - follow events of great importance on-site an (correspondent) - work permanently in a specific locality, usually abroad, obviously possessing an excellent knowledge of the country and the language of which events are narrated (correspondent); - carry out photographic services to tell the news writing also the captions of the single images (photojournalist) Professional opportunities: in newspapers and online magazines, radio and television stations, websites; freelance photojournalist; foreign correspondent. Profile: Text reviewers Functions: The reviewer of the texts must possess a great culture and have a mother tongue proficiency if he revises texts in a foreign language. They must possess the mastery of the subject they deal with. Through their intervention, they must collaborate with the translator, and correct possible errors. They should be well-balanced and possess the capacity for objective judgment, must know how to dialogue and listen (in relations with translators) the opinion of others. Skills: Text reviewers are not proof-readers. They carry out editing activities and are therefore responsible for the quality of the final product. Professional opportunities: Editing, cross-check activities at publishers and magazines, including online ones, and translation agencies. Text reviewers at the European Union.
The 2nd cycle Degree in "Modern Languages and Translation for international relations" is awarded after passing a final examination, consisting of the presentation and discussion of an original thesis prepared by the student under the guidance of a supervisor, in one of the relevant scientific sectors in the Course syllabus and in which the student has earned credits. The modalities of the final examination and for the choice of the supervisor are described in the Regulations of the Degree Course.
