Course info
The course aims at training engineers with competences enabling them to work in the field of electrical, energy and nuclear engineering, with advanced knowledge of the principles underlying the processes of production, distribution, operation and use of energy, in its various forms (electrical, nuclear, thermal and from alternative and renewable sources), as well as the relevant processes and systems, environmental, economic, juridical and safety implications. The educational program provides for the same core subjects as well as some common class specific subjects, as the other courses in Industrial Engineering in Palermo, privileging the training about specific ambits of electrical, energy, nuclear, safety and industrial protection engineering. The course then investigates further specific issues of individual class specific ambits, in order to diversify the training with respect to various application areas. The training is completed and enriched by related and integrative subjects. The course provides, in particular: 1) core educational activities in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and class specific activities, such as computer aided design, and construction theory; 2) course specific educational activities, with respect in particular to the technology of materials, technical physics and energetics, fluid operated machines, principles of electrical engineering, measurements, electrical machines and plants, principles of nuclear plants, safety and risk analysis; 3) specific ambit-related educational activities: a) electrical engineering: electrical machines, electric and electronic measurements, electrical systems; b) energy and nuclear engineering: energetics, energy management, nuclear plants, thermal hydraulics, nuclear measurements and radiation protection; The educational programme is integrated by notions of computer science and applications, statistics, business economics, with respect to specific professional applications. Graduates will possess the competences needed to continue their education, or to carry out their professional activities in multidisciplinary application areas, and more specifically in the areas which are investigated in-depth, being able to carry out activities such as the design, production, operation and organization, assistance to technical-commercial facilities, risk analysis, safety management, both as self-employees and in manufacturing or service companies, as well as in public administration. The training, even in absence of professionalising training, enables graduate to enter the labour market as well as to continue their studies(2nc cycle degree courses, university master courses) The educational programme provides frontal teachings, class and laboratory practice, stages in companies, supported by the teaching stuff provided by teachers, both in printed and electronic format, and available on the web
Employment opportunities may be found at: - Institutional and private companies dealing with comprehensive power supply, not limited to electric power, but also gas, heat, servicing (including financial services) as well as "turnkey" plants; - Public administration; - A very large number of companies (from small to large sized ones) operating in the energy and machine energy sector (thermal and hydraulic machines, engines, boilers, heat exchangers, refrigeration and air conditioning industry, oil industry, solar and wind plant sectors); - Self-employment (also after professional qualification and registration in the Order of Engineers), professional offices or companies that design, install or operate power plants and electrical systems. Intense activity is related to the planning, implementation and management of heating systems, air conditioning systems for environmental well-being in the civil, commercial, industrial buildings, etc. Graduates may also continue their studies without any additional educational duties in the 2nd cycle degree courses om "Electrical Engineering" and "Electrical and Nuclear Engineering" of the University of Palermo.
To obtain the degree, students must have acquired 180 credits including those relating to the final examination (3 credits). The final test has the objective of assessing the level of maturity and critical skills of the undergraduate, with respect to learning and to the acquired knowledge, on completion of the activities provided by the course syllabus. The final examination consists of a written or oral test, in accordance with the rules fixed every year by the Degree Course Regulations for the final examination, respecting and consistent to the calendar, the ministerial requirements and to the relevant Guidelines of the University.
