Course info
The course aims at training 2nd cycle graduates capable of developing and implementing the production of industrial artifacts in various types of materials, of optimizing the use of materials in specific technological and structural applications, of developing the functional and structural features of materials, to manage the relevant applied research activities and to design artifacts with specific features. Mandatory teachings aim at completing an enriching core competences in Chemistry and Physics, as well as mandatory and elective courses providing competences in the fields of design, preparation, transformation and applications of materials. During the first course year, students learn the basics of scientific subjects and materials engineering, while the second year, more specializing, provides two options: the first one, related to Nanotechnologies, Biomaterials and Bio-nanotechnologies and the second one related to Structural and Functional Materials, such as materials for energy conversion, for transports, packaging, etc…, for the study of aging phenomena and of the problems related to recycling. The training is completed and integrated with mandatory as well as elective laboratory experiences, elements of business culture provided through seminars, lectures and internships in companies, and adequate knowledge of at least one foreign language of the European Union. The course ends up with an original thesis, described in a paper demonstrating the command of subjects as well as the capability of working in autonomy. The educational programme aims at building the competences of the Materials engineer through core courses, class-specific courses and related courses, articulated as follows: - 36 credits at least related to basic knowledge of the structure and mechanics of matter; - 24 credits at least with respect to the preparation, processing and to the properties of materials; - Up to 30 credits related to the knowledge of materials for biomedical and nano-technological use; - Up to 30 credits related to the knowledge of functional and structural materials; - Up to 24 credits for the final examination (experimental dissertation); - 6 credits at least for other educational activities seminars, stages and internships. More than 30 credits will be taught in English.
The materials engineers know the theoretical-scientific aspects of Physics and Chemistry, but also the applicative aspects of Engineering subjects and they are therefore versatile professionals with high potential. Being capable of defining the strategies for maintaining the performance fo materials, of managing applied research activities and to design optimised materials for for the maximization of the properties of specific artifacts with specific properties, they are able to fit in manufacturing industry and mass production (eg. packaging) as well as in production companies dedicated to the production and processing of advanced materials and of materials for special purposes. A particularly important aspect is the capability to follow the transformation process of the raw material into usable object or device, but above all to solve complex problems related to the design of materials, starting from the atomic and molecular structures and identifying the property-structure- processing relations. The training thus offers to the labour market strictly scientific skills to be exerted in research organizations and quality control as well as the possibility to fit easily in the world of industrial production and processing of materials.
The final examination consists of the public discussion of an original experimental dissertation prepared under the guidance of a supervisor. The public discussion is held in front of the supervisor. Candidates must demonstrate their command of the issues they deal with, as well as the capability of working in autonomy and in an original way and the capability of communicating effectively the results of their activity. The dissertation topic and the supervising professor are defined by the Board of the Degree Course, taking into account the candidates’’ proposals and the availability of supervising professors, as per the course educational regulations. Passing the above described final examination brings to the attribution of at least 18 credits.
