Course info
The degree course in Biotechnologies aims at providing students with the essential knowledge, behavioural and technical competences for a modern study and research methodology, for the use of biological functions and systems for the production of goods and services, including the knowledge of economic and ethical issues, related to the use of biotechnological products. The specific course objectives are oriented towards the acquisition of further university training as well as to a possible immediate access to the labour market. The first two years of the course, common to all students, aim at providing students the competences and tools for the theoretical-experimental study of biological phenomena as well as the specific competence and skills to study biological phenomena at molecular, cellular and tissue level. These two years take place at the Faculty of Science. In the third year, the course provides different curricula, enabling students to direct their training towards different specific areas of biotechnology, to give a professional character to their training and to be prepared, through the possible continuation of their studies, to the achievement of the second level degrees. The expected learning outcomes, in accordance with the principles of European harmonization, meet the requirements formulated according to the system of the Dublin Descriptors.
The three year course provides basic and professional competences and skills enabling undergraduates not only to access the 2nd cycle degrees, but also to find immediate job opportunities. Graduates in Biotechnologies may find professional opportunities in the following professional fields: - Universities and other public and private research agencies; - Food industry and pharmaceutical industry and research centres; - Research and development centred for biotechnological diagnostics; - Scientific dissemination and information; - Toxicological and environmental research and survey centres; - Biotechnological service centres; - Facilities of the National Healthcare System; - Agencies for the preparation of healthcare and licensing regulations related to the use of biotechnological products. The degree in Biotechnologies is awarded to the students who have acquired the above mentioned competences as well as the capability of applying them in specific professional contexts, and of communicating their competences and transferring their technical skills in the labour market, in a relation with national and international professionals, from other scientific fields also.
To obtain the degree in Biotechnologies, students must have acquired 180 credits including those relating to the final examination (3 credits). The final test has the objective of assessing the level of maturity and critical skills of the undergraduate, with respect to learning and to the acquired knowledge, on completion of the activities provided by the course syllabus. The final examination consists of a oral test, in accordance with the rules fixed every year by the Degree Course Regulations for the final examination, respecting and consistent to the calendar, the ministerial requirements and to the relevant Guidelines of the University.
