The degree course, (class 11 . modern languages and civilizations) aims at educating graduates with sound linguistic groundings and a good knowledge of the cultural and literary contexts of the studied languages, together with the methods of linguistics, philology and literary criticism. These studies enable graduates to find professional opportunities in the field of services, in cultural institutions, publishing and communication, as well as to continue their studies aiming at the activities of teaching and research. The class L-12 aims at providing adequate knowledge of the scientific and cultural methods and contents at large, and of the specific competences of teaching Italian as a 2nd language, of foreign languages, linguistic mediation and translation, in accordance to Italian and European laws. More specifically, graduates of this course should possess: - Competences in Italian language and in two (European or extra-European) foreign languages; these competences should be related to the various usages of languages: with respect to the channel (written, spoken, transmitted...), to the social situation (various types of users, official, informal and familiar usage), to the text genres and the pragmatic and communication scopes; - Technical-translation and (written and spoken) linguistic mediation competences; - Knowledge of the cultural heritage if Italian and other studied languages; - Basic knowledge of law, economics, geography, history, socio-anthropology; - capability of working autonomously and to fit in rapidly in the labor market. The course will pay attention, in particular, to the teaching of Italian language for foreigners and to the written and spoken language and communication skills. Educational activities, in Italian and in two foreign languages aim at developing the needed knowledge and skills for intercultural and inter-language mediation, and to their application to the techniques of translation and conference translation, as well as facilitating actions in the learning of Italian languages, both for children and adults. These competences should be enriched and strengthened through the acquisition of basic competences in the literary, cultural, economic-juridical and socio-anthropological fields. Educational activities aiming at developing knowledge, competences and skills in the field of communication, information management and linguistic analysis. Elective activities enabling students to build their personal curriculum, enriching and completing their interdisciplinary education. Stages and practice periods at Italian and/or foreign companies, institutions, schools or universities, enabling them to apply, integrate and experiment the knowledge and skills they acquired in a real professional context.

Class 11: the final examination consists in a written paper about one topic related to one of the course subjects. The paper should demonstrate the analysis and expression skills achieved by the student. Class 12: the final examination aims at ascertaining the acquisition of written and spoken linguistic mediation skills, through the discussion, in two languages, of a topic agreed with the examining Board.
