Course info
The 2nd cycle degree in Telecommunications Engineering aims at providing the capability to analyse, design, producing and managing advanced telecommunication systems, with respect not only to the emerging service architectures on the internet, but also to the most efficient techniques for the use of transmission media. To do this the course provides solid groundings on modelling and techniques for interfacing to the electromagnetic medium, achieved through mandatory activities in the sector ING-INF/02 (at least 12 credits), with respect to the principal modulation and coding techniques to protect information from noise and interference, to the modern protocol architectures and medium access techniques used in mobile communication systems, achieved through mandatory educational activities in the sector ING-INF/03 (at least 30 credits), on the methods for the design, measurement and testing of electronic devices for telecommunications, through mandatory educational activities in sectors ING-INF/01 and ING-INF/07 (at least 21 credits) and to professional ethics and regulations in force with respect to the management of public and private companies, in other applicative courses. Based on the above mentioned core mandatory competences, the programme enables students to focus their specialist training towards the profession of engineers specialist in designing and managing networks, with particular attention to issues of security and confidentiality of information, to modelling complex systems, to architecture protocols of packet networks and to the design of integrated services on the Internet (with up to 18 additional credits in the field ING-INF/03 and up to 9 credits in the field FIS/01), or towards the profession of expert engineer in the methodological aspects needed for the analysis, sizing and design of electronic systems for analogical and digital telecommunications, with particular attention to mixed-signal circuits, power and non-power nonlinear circuits, used in transceivers, to optical communication technologies and to the modern electronic measurement equipment (with up to 12 additional credits in the fields and ING-INF/01 ING-INF/07).
The typical professional ambits for graduates are: - Companies designing, producing and operating equipment, systems and infrastructure for acquiring, processing and transport of information (data, voice and images) on fixed and mobile networks, for observation and remote surveillance, for the performance monitoring of telecommunication networks and, in particular, of the quality of service; - Public health authorities for the management of biomedical equipment and the design, implementation and management of innovative services for healthcare; - Manufacturing companies operating in the fields of telematics and multimedia network, such as e- commerce and electronic publishing, Internet services, telemedicine and remote monitoring, - Public and private companies that provide terrestrial or space telecommunications services; - Public and private companies providing services for the aggregation and distribution of mono and multi-media content, including custom ones, for information and entertainment; - Providers of computer services; - Regulatory bodies and public control bodies with responsibilities, for example, in market regulation or in air, land and naval traffic control; - Public agencies involved in environmental monitoring and protection; - Public and private companies in different sectors, who need skills for the development and use of telecommunications systems and services in the areas of internal organization, production and marketing, as professionals in the fields of analysis, design and management systems for telecommunications, healthcare, telecommunications security; - Companies specially created for the realization of wireless networks to bridge the 'Digital Divide'. The natural professional future of the 2nd cycle graduate in telecommunications engineering is within companies that design and/or produce telecommunications systems and equipment, network operators managing complex telecommunications systems, public and private companies and institutions providing telecommunications, remote sensing and traffic control. This approach corresponds to the objective to provide the graduate with the greatest employment prospects both in the country and the EU.
The final examination is a public discussion, in front of a special Commission, of an original dissertation prepared by the student under the guidance of a supervisor. The test is designed to allow candidates to demonstrate their mastery of the subjects and ability to work independently and communicate effectively the results obtained. The Board of the Degree Course assigns to each candidate, taking into account any proposals of the same, a topic and a supervisor, in a manner best described in the Educational Regulations of the Course. The passing of final examination entails the assignment of 12 credits and the assessment contributes to the determination of the Degree mark as described in the Educational Regulations of the Course.
