Course info
The 2nd cycle Degree Course in "Plant Biology and Ecology" aims at training professionals with competences in plant biology and cryptogams and Phanerogams Botany, at taxonomic, biocoenotic and phyto-chemical level to be applied in the field of environmental management analysis. Graduates of this course will be able to evaluate the effects of plants on the environment as well as the effects of biotic and abiotic parameters on plants themselves. The course provides for: - advanced studies of biological, histological, taxonomic, molecular, eco-physiologic and chemical issues in the specific plant biology field; - advances study of the interactions between various plant organs and individuals, in normal and altered conditions; - advanced study of the environmental and biotic effects with respect, in particular, to plants; - biochemical-molecular and cytological educational activities useful for understanding the mechanisms of differentiation, control, functioning as well as the response to environmental modifications; - educational activities providing competences in the field of Applied plant biology, Phytoecology, Phyto-diagnostics, Phyto-management and of plant food certification; - educational activities providing research autonomy , with experimental dissertation about topics of Plant Biology, Plant Bioecology and the management and conservation of Biodiversity and vegetal resources. The course also provides for the advanced study of plants of agro-food , industrial and commercial interest as well as the knowledge of ecosystems and of the factors which may affect the conservation of biological integrity. For being awarded the 2nd cycle degree, students should have acquired 120 credits, including the ones related to the final examination. Educational activities consist of lectures, practice, laboratory practice, seminar, internships and stages in companies, public and private laboratories, as well as in other national, European and foreign Universities in accordance with specific agreements. The time reserved for personal study or other individual learning activities is equal to approximately 60% of the overall, with the possibility of lower percentages for individual learning activities with high experimental or practical value
Graduates in "Plant Biology and Ecology" will carry out professional activities in the field of taxonomy, plant ecology and of environmental and applied Botany, both for natural science and application, in the field of conservation, bio-indication, environmental requalification, landscape planning in accordance with eco-sustainability, protection against stress damages, use and glamorisation of vegetal biological resources. The course also provides sound cultural and professional grounding in basic and applied research in the agro-food, industrial and landscape fields. 2nd cycle graduates in Plant Biology and Ecology may work as managers in facilities specialised in crop production, environmental and landscape planning, quality control of products of biological origin and have preferential access in the Botanical Gardens and Natural History Museums, Public Parks Management , Reserves and Historic Gardens and nature tourism. They may also perform research and professional activities in public and private facilities (University, National Research Council, Regional Agencies for Environmental Protection) and teach in secondary schools of first and second grade in accordance with regulations in force. Graduates of this course, according to DPR n.328/01, may access, after the relevant National qualification examination, to the profession of "Senior Biologist", section A of the professional register. Access to further study The training in general biology and the theoretical practical specialisation in plant biology prepare graduates of this course for accessing PhD courses, 2nd level University Master Courses, Graduate schools and higher education courses.
It consists of the preparation of a written dissertation, presenting original experimental results related to a research project, or part of it, obtained during the internship in a university research laboratory, or other public or private research laboratories under specific agreements with the University of Palermo. Normally, this internship should take place during the second course year. It could start during the II semester of the first year, after approval of the Board of the Degree Course. The dissertation might also be related to field research results. Normally, this internship or field research should take place during the second course year. It could start during the II semester of the first year, after approval of the Board of the Degree Course. The research project will be carried out under the guidance of a Faculty member(Full professor, associate professor, researcher) acting as a tutor.. The activity will culminate with the presentation and discussion of the project during the final examination. Through this activity students will acquire knowledge about the experimental methodology, analytical tools and techniques of data analysis and processing as well as command of English language in the specific professional area.
