he course specifically aims at building a professional alternative to the traditional engineers (electrical, electronic, computer, ...) a technician who is capable of analysing systems of various physical nature, planning objectives to be achieved, performing the mathematical formulation of a control problem that takes into account the above objectives, and of solving this problem also using the available computer tools and, finally, of carrying out the practical realization of a prototype of the whole control system.
In order to achieve such professional qualifications, students of this course must possess adequate command of core subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry, geometry) and basic competences in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation.
Starting to the cultural background they have acquired during the 1st cycle, Automation Engineers should acquire the skills enabling them to study the interaction between systems of different physical nature (teachings in the areas of Technical Physics, Mechanics, Thermal and Hydraulic Machines, Electric Power Conversion Systems, electric Machines and Activations). In addition, Automation Engineer must acquire knowledge of the typical analysis and design methods of Automatics with special reference to the identification of models allowing a mathematical description of the mechanisms underlying the functioning of the system, and to the adequate control techniques for the constructed model. Finally, the curriculum includes the study of particular classes of systems, including mobile and industrial robotic systems, industrial automation systems and intelligent transport systems.
