The 2nd cycle in History, Anthropology and Geography provides specialist knowledge of historical issues related to the Western world in the global context, from the Middle Ages to contemporary times and of the issues related to man-environment relation particularly in the modern age and contemporary. The course aims to introduce students to the methodologies of research and of the production of a historical knowledge aware of the acquisitions and revisions of historiographical tradition, particularly in terms of the critical treatment of documentary, narrative and other sources, , even in the light of current use of information technology. On the other hand, it aims at building specialist expertise in the field of geographical studies, both at theoretical and methodological level and able to deal critically with geographic information systems and cartographic representations and to develop models of reading and interpreting complex territorial systems, thanks to the use of new information and multimedia technologies. The Historical issues which the course deals with are political history and economic, institutional, social, cultural and religious history issues. Description of the course The educational programme, starting from basic knowledge is developed through mandatory teaching courses in large chronological areas of the history of Europe (Middle Age, Modern Age, Contemporary age) providing for the setting of methodological and historiographical issues, the reflection of interpretative concepts, as well as for the close observation of crucial aspects of the European issue, with respect, in particular, to the Mediterranean area. Other mandatory courses are related to anthropology, economic history, geography and political economics, as well to courses aiming at incorporating historical, anthropological and geographical knowledge in the methodological and problematic context of human sciences. Again, methodological disciplines (Palaeography, Archival Science, Library and Bibliography) provide a training-oriented towards historical sources processing, while the anthropology, sociology and geography disciplines allow openings to the most updates perspectives on human sciences. A wide range of courses is provided with respect to related and integrative subjects, enabling students to build their curriculum wither in disciplinary or chronological sense, in accordance with the guidelines to be proposed in the educational planning and promoting the maturation of personal interests and skills for students.
After further specialisation provided by law, graduates may access to secondary school teaching careers. They may also start a career in research, or training for university teaching in the areas of historical, anthropological and geographical studies. The course also prepares for the following professions: - specialists in historical, anthropological, artistic, political and philosophical studies; - archivists, librarians, museum curators and assimilated specialists; - researchers, graduates technicians and assimilated; - School managers and similar; - School inspectors and similar; - Trainers and experts in educational and curriculum planning
It consists of the discussion, in front of a specific Board, of a paper prepared under the guidance of a supervising professor, aiming at demonstrating the achievement of specific course objectives, and in particular; specialist methodological skills and mature historiographical awareness, familiarity with the sources of different nature, the ability to make use of literature in a foreign language, maturity, and independence of judgment.
