2nd cycle graduates in Classics should possess advanced competences enabling them: a) To read classics and translate them with awareness, through their direct and consolidated competence in Greek and Latin language; b) To contextualise classics, applying the methodology of literary analysis, linguistic-philological and historical-archaeological sciences, critically and autonomously analysing the sources; c) To interpret, through the use of other knowledge and competences, the fortune and reception of classics in the Middle, Modern and Contemporary Age; d) To have full command in use computer tools for the Humanities and in a European Union language. Students will be able, through this course, to enhance the previously acquired knowledge, specialising it through an adequate in-depth study and developing their attitude to analysis and research, with respect to philology and classic, medieval and modern literatures, and eventually to diachronic linguistics. During the first course year, students may study in depth and acquire a critical awareness of their core competences, through the study of class specific subjects In the philological, linguistic, literary, historical-archaeological ambits; during the second year, they may complete their education in a more interdisciplinary perspective and prepare the dissertation for the final examination
Graduates in Classics may start a career in teaching in Secondary Schools, after having completed their qualification and having passed the relevant competitive examinations. They may also continue their studies through PhD courses and 2nd level University Master Courses. 2nd cycle graduates may find professional opportunities as specialised professionals in the organisation, coordination and planning of activities related to the defence, promotion and glamorisation of cultural heritage in public and private agencies, foundations, cultural institutions. Finally, their knowledge and competences with respect to classical civilisations, languages and texts enable them to find professional opportunities in the publishing industry, in the preparation and management of cultural projects, in the translation and dissemination of classical works and in various specialised editing roles.
The final examination, awarded with 27 credits, Consists of the preparation of a written dissertation, under the guidance of a supervising Professor, demonstrating the acquired knowledge and competence as well as the candidate's capability of tackling and carrying out in a autonomous and original way a research project. Graduates of this course should prove their full command of expository and topic-related writing as well as of the expression means, with a mature capability of organising, revising and structuring the results of a research work. The modes of discussion and evaluation in terms of final mark are described in the Course Educational Regulations.
