Course info
The degree course aims at providing solid undergraduate knowledge of the history of philosophical thought as well as of the history of mankind from antiquity to date, and well-grounded information about the processes of change of philosophical, socio-political and economic processes. The educational programme is structured in a way to provide students with command of the variety of methods and tools for the updating and research in the philosophical and historical field as well as a critical approach to the main problems of the contemporary debate in the specific areas of theoretical, linguistic and logical-epistemological, philosophical and scientific, historical, social, ethical and political, religious and aesthetic research. The course also provides with: - adequate reading skills and comprehension of texts and sources in the original language; - argumentative skills, writing and oral communication skills, knowledge of the methods of formal reasoning; - competences in subjects related to psychology, sociology, pedagogy, anthropology, science at large, literature and art, which are complementary to philosophical and historical and yet functional to the subsequent professional opportunities; - Mastery of the use of bibliographic tools; - Language skills in at least one European language. The course therefore favors: - The students' disposition to identify, with critical approach, the conceptual structures of historical-cultural processes; - the capability of applying the knowledge of the historical-philosophical tradition to current theoretical research issues to arrive to autonomous judgments on philosophical logical-epistemological, linguistic, aesthetic, historical-social, ethical-political issues as well as on scientific issues and on their impact on public opinion. The degree course provides a group of common activities aiming at basic humanistic training and at the acquisition of core competences in the field of philosophical and historical studies, (at least 60 credits). Related and integrative educational activities are provided in the fields of history, philosophy and human sciences, in a way to enable students to acquire credits useful for accessing high-school teaching as a profession (History, Philosophy or Human Sciences in Lyceum) or to choose other professional profiles.
In addition to allowing a wide choice with respect to the continuation their studies and to be preparatory for 2nd cycle degree courses aiming at the qualification for teaching of History and Philosophy and Human Sciences in high schools , the job profile and training of graduates of this course will allow them to carry out activities in the traditional humanities ( publishing and journalism in their various aspects, personnel management , public relations etc.), in public administration, in jobs requiring a good knowledge of the cognition mechanisms (creative advertising, professional activities related to information processing and knowledge) and in the context of ethics advice in hospitals , in industry and business. The degree in philosophical and historical studies may constitute, in short, a very useful intellectual training for the performance of work requiring flexibility, abstract reasoning skills and capability of identifying critical inter-relationships among different knowledge areas. Graduates of this course are professionals capable of operating, in the fields of cultural heritage, historical heritage glamorization, conservation of sources, with mid-level positions. Specifically, they may find professional opportunities in the following areas: - Consulting, teaching and training in bodies and institutions in charge of the preservation of cultural heritage ( archives, libraries , museums, historical societies ); - In collaboration with research projects or initiatives for disseminating philosophy and history in the fields of publishing, electronics, exhibition; - Cooperation in the preparation of information and teaching materials in the field of philosophy and history; - In the service of cultural tourism, providing an historical context to the artistic, museum and environmental assets. - Cooperation in the organization of events and shows promoting the local history or traditions and cultural identities; - Cooperation in the creation of works of philosophical and historical disclosure or scientific research projects; - In the creation of publications (catalogs, informational materials , guides intended for the public, the media, as well as for philosophical and historical publishing; - Editing about philosophical and historical themes in magazines and publishing houses; - In the activities of cataloging and filing of the documentary heritage and, of the historical, philosophical, historical and artistic heritage at large; - in public institutions, in projects for the territorial or economic analysis of the historical past.
