Course info
The Degree course provides full advanced training in Archaeology, with respect, in particular, to classical, post-classical and middle-East archaeology, which benefit of a long tradition in the University of Palermo, and to applied sciences. The course has a strong humanistic approach, aiming at providing students not only with the historical understanding of archaeological evidence (sites, monuments or artifacts), but also with the ability to situate it in its context independently and critically, drawing on various documentary sources, from literary text or epigraphic evidence of the settlement or material culture. The technical expertise already provided during the 1st cycle course in cultural heritage is also provided, with particular reference to the physical sciences applied to archeology, paleontology and palaeoecology, and remote sensing and to the main computer tools for recording, analyzing, querying and managing archaeological data, both within individual disciplines, and through theoretical and practical workshops with specific purposes, as part of additional training. In this way, students will acquire the ability to conduct field work (whether archaeological excavation, surface research or analysis of artifacts) independently, but under the guidance of a research manager and/or within work groups. Students will autonomously choose the specific curriculum best fitting their personal interests, in the field of classical , post-classical or middle East archaeology, with a historical-artistic approach, or an approach focusing on material culture and settlements, or on methodology and applied sciences. Laboratory and/or field activities are awarded with adequate credits, giving students the chance to learn specific experimental techniques and to practice various archaeological disciplines on field (through excavation, landscape archaeological research, analysis of artifacts). Given the commitment in terms of time for gathering, classifying and processing research data, the final examination is awarded with the maximum number of credits.
2nd cycle graduates in Archaeology will hold high responsibility positions in specific institutions, such as: superintendence, Museums, local authorities, research organizations, foundations and cultural institutions in the areas of protection, conservation, use and management of the Archaeological Heritage, professional companies operating in the tourism and Cultural Heritage areas. They will be able, in particular, to organise activities for the promotion and outfitting of museums and exhibitions and of all initiatives aiming at the use of heritage and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of archeology. They will be able to independently perform activities of excavation and survey of the archaeological heritage as well as landscape archaeological survey, and to organize the ensuing laboratory, study, documentation and finds classification activities, also through computer tools. Graduates will have access to specialization courses in Archaeology and the like, to PhD and University Master courses in the humanities and the cultural heritage sector. They can also aim to the school teaching jobs, after passing the relevant qualification and competitive examinations provided by the Law.
It consists of an original written dissertation, written under the guidance of a supervising professor, about a topic related to the studied disciplinary areas and to the educational programme , demonstrating the acquisition of sound methodological abilities, specialist knowledge typical of the degree course and capability of critical thinking about the dissertation topic(s), with respect to the above described educational objectives.
